JUNK music-making and an

eco-rock gig are highlights of a arts day being put together for people in Swaffham next month. Young people from Breckland have been working with Norfolk Music Works to design their own community project and they have decided to combine their love of music with their enthusiasm for

eco-friendly ideas.

The result is an eco-arts day planned for mid-February and it will include junk music making, an

eco-friendly exhibition and climax with an evening eco-rock gig at the Assembly Rooms in Swaffham.

And to get prepared for the main event, Norfolk Music Works is holding a band try-out day on Saturday at Campingland Community Centre from 1pm to 5pm. Any band, of any age, wishing to take part in the event needs to contact Norfolk Music Works on 01485 609009 or email ema@musicworks.org.uk to express interest and book a slot on the day (vocal PA and drum kit will be provided).

Volunteers are needed to help to make the idea happen and organisers need local bands to play at the gig for free, and more young people to join the group and make the idea turn into reality.

Ema Holman, general manager of Norfolk Music Works, said: “We are looking for more 16 to 25-year-olds who have some spare time to help organise and run an eco-arts day for Swaffham. You don't have to be interested in music to take part - we are looking for anyone who wants to help out. We need photographers, box office staff and stewards, backstage crew, people to help publicity and press, exhibition organisers, a group to help select the final band line-up and those interested in helping with the finance and general event organisation.

“This project will give young people the freedom to experiment with their own artistic ideas and to develop new skills.”

In addition, each young person that volunteers has the opportunity to undertake an arts award, a nationally accredited award which recognises young people's arts, communication, planning and leadership skills.” Participants will be able to work towards bronze (level 1) or silver (level 2) and will be guided by a range of specialist creative industries staff.

Anyone interested in helping can go to Campingland Community Centre, Swaffham, on Saturday from 1pm to 5pm and meet the team or contact Norfolk Music Works on either 01485 609009 or emailema@musicworks.org.uk
