RUGBY: Watton first team travelled to Lakenham on a wet and windy day to play an eagerly-awaited friendly fixture.
Lakennham kicked off and both teams started well, with Watton’s pack mauling the ball from their 22 in to the Lakenham 22, only for the ball to be turned over and some quick hands saw Lakenham score an unconverted try.
Straight after the restart Lakenham’s number 10 chipped over the top and with a mix up in the Watton defence the Lakenham outside centre slid in to score another unconverted try.
Watton then added some pressure but once again the ball was turned over in the opposition 22 and so good work from the backs saw them run in the third try in 15 minutes.
After this the Watton forwards took control and with some great work they shipped the ball out wide for Grant to pull a converted try back.
Watton then spent the rest of the half in the Lakenham half and with a lovely pass from Walker, Gilly made 20 yards before he popped the ball to Gag who also made good ground before passing the ball back to Gilly who scored an uncoverted try to leave the score at half time 15-12.
In the second half Watton took total control of the game but good defending from Lakenham saw Watton have to work extremely hard and the forwards were using the training ground moves to try and break them down.
Between Walker and Gage they were controlling the game, the backs started to up the pace of the game with good work from Stickland, Leicester and Thompson all making good ground.
With Lakenham’s fitness starting to wane, Watton forwards kept recycling the ball then quickly put it out wide and two good paces saw Grant step past two opponents to score his second and put Watton 17-15 up.
With 10 minutes left Lakenham added little pressure and with Watton defending well the score ended 15-17 to Watton.
MoM: Grant Thompson.
