WATTON CC kicked off the new season on Saturday at local rivals Rocklands A with a comprehensive win.

They were hoping to build on last season's successful campaign when they won Norfolk Cricket League's Division Eight. A revamp of the league structure meant that Watton were promoted to Division Five this season alongside a number of last season's opponents.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first on a flat- looking wicket. Rockland's top-order batsmen made a solid start fending off Watton's pacy bowling attack.

Mick Kay (34) and Graham Puttock (63) scored the bulk of Rockland's runs, helping their team post a useful 186 for seven off their 45 overs.

Pick of Watton's bowlers was Paul Norman with three wickets for 27 runs.

In reply, Watton's batsman chased down the total with ease. Malcolm Ranson (30) and Paul Norman (20) made a quick start, dominating the opening bowlers.

Norman's wicket led to the arrival of 15-year-old Joe Oakey, who cruised to 81 runs not out with a mix of elegant stroke play and controlled aggression.

The third-wicket partnership of 117 runs between Oakey and Bruno Norman (39 not out) helped Watton reach their target at a canter with eight wickets and nine overs to spare.

Watton hope to maintain this form at home against Colney on Saturday, 2pm.
