Thetford RFC's resounding win over Haverhill puts them two points clear of Newmarket at the top of the table with both teams having played the same number of games.

Captain Gordon Hodgkinson said: “I can't express how pleased I am with the performance of all the players today. We have tough fixtures ahead of us but the whole club is buzzing with confidence.”

Thetford host Lowestoft and Yarmouth in the next round of the Norfolk Cup this Saturday.

Thetford travelled to Haverhill on Saturday, following a Norfolk Cup victory at home to Dereham the previous Wednesday evening, with an air of confidence.

The game opened with Thetford dominating the Haverhill midfield and it didn't take long for the first try to be awarded to Thetford.

Haverhill stuck at their game and for a brief spell looked like they could work a way around the ever-present Thetford defence.

But it was not to be and Thetford quickly took control again with their forwards winning ball comfortably to enable both centres Damion Smith-Taylor and Carl Smith to run riot and see both wingers Stuart Awcock and the vintage Burt Reynolds score in the corners.

Not to be outshone by his back division, Sands scored two tries from full-back in his customary powerful style.

With an outstanding running performance from second row Allan Dixon, who was named PortaRamp man of the match, Thetford came away with a 42-0 victory.
