Swaffham slump continues

Godmanchester Rovers 4, Swaffham Town 1
For the third successive fixture, the Pedlars failed to bring home any Ridgeons League Division One points, defeated 4-1 on each occasion.
Despite playing the more attractive football, Swaffham were bullied by Godmanchester Rovers, the home side scoring their first in the third minute as Swaffham were caught napping early on as they have on previous occasions.
The wake-up call delivered, the work-rate quickened and attempts from Nathan Clarke, Will O’Brien and Nathan Cross showed what Swaffham are capable of, but there was no reward.
Rovers were tamed only threatening keeper Mayes, who saved well from the Godmanchester number seven.
Centre forward Joe Jackson went close with two efforts, meeting a perfectly-flighted ball from Cross with his head and seeing a shot from a David Spalding through ball, go just wide.
In the final minute of the half, a bizarre goalmouth scramble failed to level the scores as Jackson hit the post and Mehdi Mehrpour, going for three goals in three starts, shot wide.
The second half saw further frustration but a well-deserved equaliser, was headed in by Scott Voutt from an O’Brien free kick.
Richard Cornwall made his return to the side, replacing Mehrpour and David Weaver-Pope replaced Matthew Parkinson (hamstring).
Rovers’ second came in the 70th minute, a long ball into the box, beating all for the number 10 to net. With two minutes to go, Swaffham won a free kick 30 yards out, Mayes came up the pitch into the opposite area, won the head but didn’t convert. A long ball clearance was pounced on by the Godmanchester centre forward for their third.
A free kick awarded for a back pass on the penalty spot, provided the fourth goal, a mis-hit by the division’s second-highest goalscorer, Paul Bass.
The first team are away to Cornard United this Saturday (kick-off 3pm) and then welcome Gorleston to Shoemakers Lane next Tuesday, March 29 (kick-off 7.45pm). Also on Saturday, the reserves play East Harling away (kick-off 2.30pm) and the A team are away to Cockers (kick-off 3pm).
