Swaffham Town 1, Great Yarmouth Town 2

It was end to end in the opening minutes of this Tuesday night fixture with Yarmouth volleying over the bar in the 4th minute and Matthew Kenny having a header pushed onto the bar from a Gavin Norman knock-on in the seventh.

The deadlock broken in the 14th minute, with Swaffham failing to clear and the resulting shot deflected in-off Tom Rainford. Swaffham appeared stunned and their creativity periodically dried up.

Yarmouth's second in the 24th minute, following a corner resulting from a fine Lee Brooks save, an unchallenged header, did jump-start the Pedlars.

A well-worked attack starting from defence with Lewis Hemeter finding Gavin Norman who pulled the ball back for Andy Hunter to shoot, the parried save falling to Kyle Plumb to knock in.

Two minutes later in the 40th, Norman was brought down in the box but failed to score from the spot.

Swaffham started the second half as they had finished but there seemed little evidence that they were going to level the scores.

The football was entertaining and the intermittant drizzle was welcome on a warm and breezy evening but the scoreline remained 2-1.

Swaffham Town 1, Saffron Walden Town 1

It was honours even for Swaffham and Saffron Walden in Ridgeons League Division One at the weekend.

The strong winds didn't provide either side with any particular advantage and probably stifled some of the football anticipated from these progressing teams.

Saffron Walden came to Shoemakers Lane undefeated with the Pedlars building on some good recent performances.

Their character and creativity has been growing with every fixture.

Swaffham started well with inspired runs by Kyle Plumb, crossing for Andrew Hunter and Ian Simmons to set up an opportunity for Gavin Norman. Simon Jones retired in the 12th minute with a groin injury, replaced by Richard Cornwall.

It took a fine stop by the Walden keeper at the 30-minute mark to keep out a Gavin Norman strike, headed on by Cornwall from a Ben Russell free-kick.

The counter-attack led to a Saffron Walden corner from which a header gave keeper Lee Brookes no chance.

Swaffham, in the second half, played against the wind.

They continued to show their potential and soon were back in the mix with chances narrowly missed by Hunter and Norman.

The pressure finally paid in the 69th minute when Andy Hunter netted his first of the season, from a Ben Russell free-kick.

Further chances for both sides were dealt with by the defences, Walden substitute Tom Butchart seeing red for a challenge on Matthew Kenny.
