Rocklands notched up their sixth win of the season with a 29-run victory over Saxlingham A in Division Four of the Lucas Fettes Norfolk Cricket League.

Having lost the toss, Rocklands were inserted by the visitors and got off to a steady start on a slightly damp pitch that made free scoring difficult.

The first wicket fell in the 13th over when Les Abel was caught at cover in an attempt to up the scoring rate.

Will Defoe and Merv Mann continued to find conditions tricky to score fluently and the score progressed slowly to 90-1 in the 30th over.

However, with wickets in hand, Rocklands were able to break the shackles in the last 15 overs.

Although Merv Mann fell for 28, Matt Mann joined Defoe (48) at the crease and put on a quickfire 60 for the second wicket.

The batsmen were now on top, with some huge sixes being struck and Mann showing the confidence of youth to step across to off-stump and flick the ball through square leg.

Mann fell one short of a deserved half-century but Steve Halls finished the innings well with 16 scored off the last over. Rocklands concluded on 199-5 off their 45 overs.

Saxlingham A started their chase in measured fashion, with the miserly Steve Carr bowling his first eight overs for just five runs.

Nonetheless, Mark English was looking in ominous form and the score had moved to 20 off the first 10 overs when the ever-reliable Les Abel struck, with Steve Halls taking the catch at cover.

English continued to play well, but was finding little support at the other end and Rocklands set about restricting his boundary opportunities.

Both Les Abel and Richard Smith were bowling well in tandem and the scoreboard pressure began to mount.

Rocklands were also fielding well and fine catches were taken by Steve Carr and Merv Mann to reduce Saxlingham to 88-3 in the 30th over.

However, with English still batting well, the game was far from secure.

Barry Glover entered the attack and bowled a disciplined four-over spell that meant the run rate continued to rise and left Saxlingham needing 60 off the last five overs.

English reached a deserved century soon after, but it was Rocklands' day as Saxlingham were unable to reach their victory target and finished on 170-5, giving Rocklands a win by 29 runs.
