Gateshead goalkeeper Pete Jameson scored but it was not enough to deny Harrogate a 2-1 win in the National League.

The visitors went ahead thanks to an unlikely figure when a long kick by Jameson bounced over Harrogate’s debutant keeper Rory Watson in the 46th minute.

The bizarre goal by the ex-Harrogate stopper was quickly cancelled out by Josh Hmani before Watson’s blushes were spared with a last-gasp effort, credited as an Ashley Boatswain own goal, to to ensure the hosts grabbed all three points.

A goalless first 45 at Wetherby Road sparked into life when Jameson’s clearance at the start of the second half got helped on by the wind and fooled former Hull youngster Watson.

Hmani started the comeback trail eight minutes later when his strike deflected past Jameson before the late drama earned Harrogate a third win of the National League campaign to put them fifth.
