Robert Sanchez’s Chelsea future appears in serious doubt after he was left out of the squad for Sunday’s 4-3 win against Brighton.
The signing of Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa was confirmed hours before kick-off at Stamford Bridge and the World Cup winner went straight into the side.
Mike Penders, who is considered a possible future number one by the club, was named on the bench and the 21-year-old appears now to be Xabi Alonso’s back-up keeper.
It means Sanchez, whose errors in Monday’s 3-2 win over Fulham prompted the club to bring in Martinez, is likely no longer to be in the manager’s plans.
The Spaniard’s performances have been under scrutiny for much of his tenure in the Chelsea goal, with successive managers leaving him out due to concerns over his form.
Martinez was unable to give his new team a first clean sheet in 18 matches, conceding three times as the Blues won a pulsating match.
