AN unforeseen last-minute change of venue for the East District Cycling Association's annual luncheon and prize presentation could have been a recipe for chaos.

But luckily several members of Cycling Club Breckland stepped into the breach to ensure that everything ran smoothly.

Organiser of the day on Sunday, Breckland's Paul Vergette, ensured that all concerned were notified of the new venue by press, phone, post or web while his club-mate Don Saunders managed to book his local village hall, at Carbrooke, at short notice.

In addition, the traditional reliability ride held in the morning saw Saunders riding and measuring a new 50km route centred on the headquarters.

Taking the prestigious Best All-Rounder title run over 25, 50, 100 miles and 12 hours was Ken Roesner (Fat Birds CC) who had ridden from his home near King's Lynn to collect his award.

Don Saunders, in his first racing season for many years, was Best All-Rounder in his 50-59 year old age group while other Breckland riders receiving awards were Bobby De'ath and Iain Dawson, who were tandem champions at 10 and 25 miles.

The club returned the fastest team times in the 10-mile, 15-mile, 25-mile and circuit 25-mile qualifying events with T Barber, G Muller and A Newark 1-05:23 winning the 10 mile; T Barber, A Stevenson and C Nudds' 1-39:35 the 15 mile; T Barber, B De'ath and C Nudds 3-02:37 the circuit 25-mile champions with A Newark, T Barber and C Nudds collecting the 25-mile award in 2-56:55.

The reliability ride attracted about 20 riders on a hard, windy day.

They all completed the course successfully, including the youngest entrant, Declan Davis, who rode round with his grandfather Don Saunders.
