Emily shines in championships

East District Cycling Association chairman Cycling Club Breckland's Don Saunders assumed the role of organiser of the National 25 mile Championships for women, juniors and men on Sunday on a course based at Attleborough.

Competitors for this most prestigious of events in the time trial calendar came from all corners of the United Kingdom including the Channel Islands, Shetland and Northern Ireland.

The women's even started the proceedings with the first rider leaving the start time-keeper at 6.19am. Sole Breckland woman Laura Gambling recorded 1 hour 4 minutes 38 seconds to come second in her age group.

Winner overall was Julia Shaw (Utag Yamaha.com) in 55:18.

Emily Davis (CC Breckland), at 13 the youngest competitor, led off the 24-strong field of juniors ranging in age from 12-18.

Eighteen year old Joe Perrett, (Glendene Biketrax CC) turned in a super ride of 53:07 to take the champion's medal while Eimly qualified for the girls' championship with her 1-29:45.

Club-mate Adam Cross was delighted to record a personal best of 1-01:47 to come 12th.

Main interest in the men's event lived up to expectations when Northern Irishman Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit RT) took the Champions crown in a time of 48:23 over a minute faster than his nearest competitor C Newton (Rapha Condor) in 49:32.

Coming second in his age group, Breckland's Chris Nudds recorded 59:05 followed by club-mate Alan Stevenson, 1-01:39 and Mark Fairhead 1-3:40.

Last Wednesday's club event saw Geoff Muller and Adam Cross the only two under 26 minutes in 25:04 and 25:22 respectively on a hard evening.

Also riding were Mark Fairhead (26:00), Miles Lubbock (27:37), James Birch (30:24), Alan Holland (30.46), Emily Davis (32:56) and Don Saunders and Declan Davis (26:12) on tandem.
