Swaffham Town have slipped from top spot in the Thurlow Nunn First Division table after defeat to Norfolk rivals Great Yarmouth Town on Easter Monday.

The weekend had started in better fashion for the Pedlars, with a 3-1 home win over Cornard United keeping them at the front of a tough title battle.

Swaffham took the lead 14 minutes into the tie, Joe Jackson cutting in from the left and smashing home from 12 yards. They then gave the visitors a consolation, a low cross getting caught between the legs of Liam Reed, the ball emerging and spinning past a wrong-footed Lee Brooks, with just 21 minutes played.

Nerves calmed just four minutes later when Jake Platten converted following a goalmouth scramble, knocking home from 10 yards. Having struck the crossbar twice before half-time, Paul Hunt’s side then wrapped up the win in the 84th minute when Matthew Castellan headed in a perfectly floated Jack Redhead free-kick.

That victory was followed up by a 1-0 loss to Yarmouth at Shoemakers Lane, seeing Long Melford reclaim top spot, with the Pedlars still having a game in hand and just a point behind. Mid-table Stowmarket are next to come to Swaffham, on Saturday (3pm).
