Having lost to University Press, Swaffham have an even bigger test this weekend when Ridgeons Division One leaders Long Melford pay a visit to Shoemakers Lane.

Last weekend Swaffham hosted the Cambridge side who are newcomers to the league.

Kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes due to players being held up by a car accident.

A warm, muggy afternoon with a strong breeze left weather conditions difficult for both teams.

The Pedlars were missing several players through holiday and injury and were in the capable hands of the temporary coaching team of Mick Simmons and Lewis Hemeter, Paul Hunt being away on business but in constant communication.

A positive start by Swaffham, the midfield slotting a through ball for Joe Jackson to run onto, the pace just too much, the keeper collecting.

The wind played its first part in the eighth minute, a Cambridge corner clearing all within the box and bouncing out for a throw.

A further attempt by the visitors from a free kick was easily cleared by David Spalding.

A blow in the 22nd minute for Swaffham, centre forward Jack Webber suffering with a back problem, substituted by Robert Powley.

Cambridge stepped up a gear and increased pressure on the home goal, an attempt following a fine cross-field ball met with a volley which rattled the home side's bar.

Good defending soaked up the pressure but the deadlock was finally broken in the 40th minute, a rebound from a free-kick met with a 30-yard volley, Dean Mayes having no chance in the Swaffham goal.

The Pedlars kept their composure and came back at Cambridge, a last chance in the first half David Spalding's free-kick cleared by the Cambridge centre-half.

Swaffham started the second half the stronger, two attempts by Jackson cleared. Jake Platten came on for Corey Shields in the 57th minute, the 16-year-old looking to impress and earn a first-team start.

Will O'Brien screamed a free- kick narrowly over the bar in the 61st minute.

Cambridge caught Swaffham ball-watching with the resulting goal kick, thumped long and low, over the spectating defence for the number 10 to walk around Mayes for a tap-in.

No luck for the Pedlars, Jackson and O'Brien having further attempts well defended and a tremendous volley by Scott Voutt hitting Swaffham man-of-the-match Richard Cornwall on its way to goal.

Cambridge finished their day's work from a corner missed by all and knocked in by the Cambridge centre-half.

Swaffham Reserves started their season last Tuesday going down 3-2 to Newton Flotman, goals from Matthew Coe and

Lee Frost.

A busy weekend for the club, as well as the fixtures, this Saturday they have the band 'Midnight Express' supported by disco 'Rock DJ' playing at Shoemakers' Lane.

Entry is by ticket only and will be limited.
