Downham Town have promoted from within to fill their short-lived managerial vacancy.

The Thurlow Nunn League First Division Club announced this afternoon that Lewy Thompson – the assistant of Bob Warby who quit on Saturday – had become the new boss at the Memorial Field. It is the 25-year-old's first managerial job in the non-league game.

Thompson, a former Wisbech Town and Swaffham midfielder who has been forced to temporarily retire because of a knee problem, said: 'I just want to place on record all the good and hard work that Bob did to get the squad this far. I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead as we try and kick our season on now.'

Warby and Thompson arrived in November 2014 and guided Downham to their best finish in seven years, ninth. They currently sit 16th in the 19-team table ahead of Saturday's trip to bottom side Needham Market Reserves.

Secretary George Dickson added: 'The boys respect Lewy and can connect with him as he's on their wavelength.'
