Youngsters from four Norfolk schools have been questioning officials on the big issues that affect our community.

More than 80 pupils from Charles Burrell, Old Buckenham, Northgate High School, and Sacred Heart Convent School came together at the Swaffham Ecotech centre on Thursday to put their queries to a panel of senior service officials.

The debate was part of a day long workshop between pupils and officers from Breckland council who worked together to identify the issues and design questions for the panel.

The inquiries by pupils included: Do the police treat young offenders differently to older ones? How often are school busses checked for safety? And why are there not more litter bins in public spaces and around schools?

Adrian Stasiak, Breckland Council Executive Member for Communities and Benefits, said: 'I know that the young people involved enjoyed the day and I hope it may encourage them to become 'Vocal Locals' within their communities.'

'Maybe they might even be inspired to put themselves forward to become a youth councillor in the next Breckland Youth Council Elections in February 2011.'

Executive Support Member, Lynda Turner, said: 'Sitting on the panel was a big challenge with some testing questions across a wide range of issues.'

'It was also a day of honesty and learning for all involved. The questions stimulated discussion and debate and that is what democracy is all about.'
