Building work has started on 46 new Watton homes which will be distinctive and highly energy-efficient, according to the developer.

The two, three and four-bedroom houses are being constructed by Abel Homes, based on the Neaton Business Park, Watton, on the former site of the former Abel’s shire horse stables, in Norwich Road.

Tony Abel, managing director of Abel Homes, said: “As far as we know, this will be the first development site in Norfolk with solar photovoltaic panels fitted to every new home as standard.”

He added: “We’re very pleased to be building in our home town of Watton. We wanted these new homes to stand out from other homes which are being built in the town, both in terms of their look and their livability and in particular their sustainability and energy-efficiency.

“I was born in this town and I want to be able to look back and be proud of what we have achieved here.”

The homes will be built from a mixture of brick, render, cedar cladding and will include triple glazing, LED downlighters and high levels of insulation.

A Good Neighbour Charter has also been put in place during the construction phase to minimise the impact on surrounding homes and businesses.

Mr Abel said: “Too often developers have no interest in the communities in which they are working”, said Tony Abel. As a local, family-owned firm, we are very aware of our responsibilities in the county in which we all live and work, which is why we adopt a different approach.”

The first home on what has been called the hus46 site will be made available in early summer.

Those wishing to receive details when the site goes on sale can register their interest at www.abelhomes.co.uk/reginterest.asp or by contacting Savills on 01603 229229.
