A Norfolk town is to challenge the fact people are asked to spend more in council tax than other residents in the same district.

During a Watton Town Council meeting on Wednesday, February 26, councillor Keith Gilbert, who also sits on Breckland District Council, highlighted the different amounts paid by Watton residents.

He highlighted the fact within the recent BDC budget, a band D property in Watton pays nearly £7 more than the equivalent in Dereham on ‘special expenses’.

Special expenses are a mechanism used by councils to charge parts of a district more.

He said Dereham properties pay £1.60, Thetford £6.74, and Watton £7.40.

Mr Gilbert added: “I have been asking the question why we pay more and have never had an answer.”

Councillors resolved unanimously to write to Breckland District Council for an explanation.
