A HEROIC newspaper delivery driver has received an award for rescuing a woman after her car skidded into a ditch and caught fire.

Joss Gage, 24, from Lancaster Avenue, Watton, has been given 100 from a fund set up in memory of paper boy Carl Bridgewater, from the West Midlands, who was killed in 1978 aged 13.

Mr Gage had been delivering EDPs and national newspapers for Edwards Newsagents Your Ideal Shop in Watton during the snow on January 7 when he witnessed the crash on the A1075 Watton Road at Wretham. He rescued the woman from the car and got her to safety just as the vehicle caught fire.

'It is nice to be given the award, but I really was not expecting it. I just did what anybody else would have done,' said Mr Gage.

Mr Gage received the Carl Bridgewater Memorial Fund award from the National Federation of Retail Newsagents on Monday at Edwards Newsagents.

Newsagent Chris Edwards said: 'As a business we are very proud of Joss's actions and his quick-thinking.'
