A new centre focused on gaming, music and video could open as a commerce group reveals ambitious plans to transform a town.

The Wayland Chamber of Commerce has announced plans to redevelop Wayland House, in Watton, into a media centre that could serve as a business and culture hub.

The plans come as Watton Town Council near the completion of its neighbour plan - a planning policy that will shape how the town is developed in the future.

Chairman of the commerce group, David Dent, said: "A digital and media centre is also a focus of our high street plan as we are hoping to have an iconic centre that will draw people between the two ends of the high street.

"This new digital and creative media centre is about business but also a focus on studios for music and video that businesses and youngsters could use. A part of the plan that is key is to have a gaming centre.

"We will create a group of youngsters who will be able to test games that are coming through from companies and also set-up the ability to have competitive gaming so its a new focus for young people in Watton."

Despite the large plan Mr Dent said there is no intention to replace the high street.

"It is not to compete with the high street but to have these two points that people can go between, we don't want to create a shopping centre," he added

"These things will take time but we have to start somewhere."

The library, which is currently at Wayland House, would be incorporated into the centre design as well as Watton Town Council officers.

Mr Dent added: "The great thing about Watton is the width of the high street but we are not making the best use of it.

"The last development was back in the 1990s, we can create off street parking and wide pedestrian parts. That's what we a aiming for as part of the neighbourhood plan. We will also be able to access central government funds to look at proper serious planning.

"The first stage of anything is planning but we have big ambitions."
