A NORFOLK security training company is expanding its range of courses in the hope of making inroads into the hospitality industry.

Established by former airmen Chris Samuels and Geoff Herschell, Watton based Extra Mile Training and Consultancy started up in 2007 offering recognised training and qualifications for security staff throughout England.

But with fewer new students taking up NVQs in the current financial year, and as a result training centres employing fewer subcontractors, the company is now seeking to expand into new markets.

While retaining their core NVQ training business in both Norfolk and the Midlands, the pair, who previously spent 22 years in the RAF Regiment, are now seeking a new clientele in the hotel and restaurant trade as well as offering security training direct to door staff.

Mr Herschell said: “People will always need training even if they have to pay for it rather than get it through government funded courses.

“We are now advertising open courses in static and patrol and door supervision.”

Mr Samuels said the company would also soon be offering a low risk conflict intervention training programme called Maybo which uses non-aggressive skills to help calm and diffuse difficult situations.

Extra Mile has also invested in a placebo drugs kit which gives people the opportunity to see what various drugs look like and the paraphernalia which accompanies them.

It is intended that when taken together the two courses will equip staff who work with members of the public on a day to day basis with the skills to make informed decisions about how to deal with people who become aggressive, are causing trouble or who may be in an intoxicated state.
