Mayor's Musings - May
PUBLISHED: 16:59 10 April 2019
This is my last article I will be writing as Mayor of Watton, and I can only hope my successor will keep up the engagement as it has been so valuable to get the message out to the public.
My year has been truly amazing, I have made many new friends and have been lucky enough to represent Watton all over Norfolk. Hopefully our message of being a destination and not a forgotten town has been drummed into a few more ears, as I have certainly been beating the drum.
I can’t thank the public enough for supporting my year, you have been great. I have had many laughs with you all on my fortnightly market surgery and have made many contacts for council through this valuable service, I have learnt a lot and met so many nice people.
One thing I have learnt, something I had no idea of until I started working on the council, was the number of groups and community activities and volunteers that we have here in Watton, from litter pickers to the memory café, there really is something for everybody.
In fact, there is an army of people in our town who tirelessly work for the betterment of the folk that live here. There is a passion too for our countryside and market town, we all want to see it better, cleaner, and with more facilities. Watton Town Council will continue to fight for all of these things.
With the great community we have, it is an easy thing for us all to work together. I call it WATTON WORKING TOGETHER. Nothing will stop that happening because deep down we all want the same things. I will strive to continue this joined up working as I see it as a way forward, helping each other, sharing ideas, after all, it is our Town, why wouldn’t you want to get involved to make it better?

The Skate park and youth provision, as you all know is close to my heart, is moving on at a good rate of knots, we are collating evidence to apply for funding. There is to be another youth forum at the sporty. Look out for the date and time on social media and posters. This is where you can have a say on what you’d like to see for the youth, alongside hearing what the youth would like to have. I would like to thank the YAB for bringing this to the forefront of the council and for working with us. Just hearing how professional the young people are in getting their views across, was staggering and made me very proud to be part of this process. As much as we do have here in Watton, we do sadly lack youth provision. As I’ve said many a time, these people are the next generation of house buyers and users of our town, they want to not only have something for themselves now, but also something for their children. Please let’s all work together to make this happen for them.
The council is well on the way to completing the Neighbourhood plan. This will be a document that will be used to aid with future plans and there will be more information regarding this in the coming months.
There are lots of upcoming events in the town, too many in fact to list. Look out for the dates on the website, social media, and posters. It’s a chance for us all to support our high street. To socialise and to enjoy what Watton has…. And that is a great community.
Once again. Thank you all for your support this last year. It truly has been a pleasure being your Mayor.
