Four students have been recognised for their outstanding commitment to their schools anti-bullying initiative by gaining a national award in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales.

On Saturday the students, all from Hamond's High School at Swaffham, were presented with the prestigious award medals and certificates by South-West Norfolk MP Christopher Fraser and Breckland District Council chairman John Labouchere.

It is believed that it is the first time in Norfolk that the award has been given to four students at the same time.

The Diana Award administers a separate Diana Anti-Bullying Award for those young people who work hard to eradicate bullying and its impact on schools and communities.

The four students are Lea Clark, aged 16, Jake Catchpole, aged 15, 16-year-old Lewis Hanrahan and Laura Allen, 14.

School head teacher YveSrodzinski said that the school was extremely proud of the students in gaining such a high-profile national award. 'They have all shown an outstanding level of responsibility, maturity, initiative, commitment and leadership to the scheme,' she said.

The four students have been actively involved in the school's anti-bullying initiative and two of them, Lea and Jake, were part of the original anti-bullying group formed in 2005.

They all now lead a team of 26 Peer Mentors who participate in one-to-one support, mentor vulnerable transition students, organise lunchtime youth clubs, help with community activities and summer schools and promote anti-bullying through assemblies.

The students have been given regular training and now lead training for their younger peers. They have written their own job description and recruit new members on an annual basis.

Ms Srodzinski said that while there isn't a bullying issue at the school, there are now preventative measures in place so that all students are aware that there is help and support available should it be needed.
