Amid challenging times for the high street a council has launched a rate relief scheme to encourage more retail firms into market towns.

Breckland Council has launched the initiative which offers retailers up to 80% business rates relief if they move into vacant units.

Businesses can apply to the scheme at any time between now and March 31 2019, with any reductions coming into force from April 1 or, going forward, 12 months from the approval date.

Paul Claussen, Breckland Council executive member for place, said: 'Supporting the regeneration of our market towns is a priority for the council and our new scheme aims to increase occupancy in town centre units, support new businesses and provide a boost for existing town centre companies by increasing footfall. By offering a helping hand to businesses in their first year of trading we can help set them on the road to future success.'
