Plans to introduce greyhound racing at Swaffham Raceway would not need planning permission, the town council has been told.

Rumours have been circulating for several weeks that dogs could soon be a regular feature on the raceway's calendar, but so far no one from the raceway has been available to comment on the issue.

But in a letter to Swaffham Town Council, Phil Daines, development services manager at Breckland District Council, said the planning department had already received a number of letters with regards to the matter.

He said: “It appears that in 1987 planning permission was given to extend the race track to allow dog racing.

“The use of the track for dog racing did not need planning permission, just the physical changes.

“The re-introduction of dog racing would not be a planning matter.”
