A PARCEL of land which is due to be handed over to Watton Town Council could be another possible site on which to build a skate park in the town.

The land, off Saham Road, is set to come into the possession of the council in the coming months as part of a Section 106 planning agreement.

The agreements are there to ensure communities gain when developers are granted large scale planning permissions in or near a town.

With the land transfer having been in the pipeline for some time the Saham Road site had been earmarked for the development of Project Rainbow's barn facility, however, with the feasibility of this part of the youth scheme in doubt other uses are now being looked at.

As Watton Town Council is currently investigating the possibility of building a skate park, with members of its Premises Committee set to assess various possible sites with planners soon, it has now been decided that the Saham Road site will be thrown into the mix.

Premises Committee chairman Michael Wassell said: 'I see no reason why the land off of Saham Road should not be considered.

'As decided at the last Premises Committee meeting the intention is to consult with planning officers from Breckland Council to ascertain the likely outcome of any planning application for recreational facilities.

'My intention is to take these officers to Lovell Gardens Playground, Stokes Avenue Playground, The field behind the community centre, Loch Neaton, Watton Sports Centre and the land adjoining Saham Road.'

At a recent meeting it was revealed that a buffer zone of at least 100m was needed between any ramps and nearby houses.

This would almost certainly discount green space at Lovell Gardens and Stoves Avenue.

Mr Wassell said that he hoped to get a written indication from planners as to what type of recreational facility is likely to gain planning approval for each site and what is likely not to.

'As well as deciding where any skate park can and cannot go, Watton Town Council will also have an indication of the likely planning outcome for any recreational facility it may wish to provide on these sites in the future,' he said.
