POLICE have launched a campaign to increase road safety outside Swaffham primary schools by cracking down on law breaking motorists.

Officers from the Roads Policing unit will be making regular visits to seven schools in order to educate drivers and enforce the 30mph speed limit.

Speed checks are expected in the forthcoming weeks outside: Ashill Primary School, Castle Acre Primary School, Narborough Primary School, Necton First School, Sporle Primary School, Swaffham Junior School, and Swaffham Infant School.

They will be carried out at the start and end of the school day when the volume of traffic is at its highest.

The campaign by Norfolk Constabulary is intended to reassure pupils and parents about road safety near schools whilst encouraging road users to reduce their speed.

Roads Policing Sergeant, Alex Bucher, said: 'We are working closer with the schools to increase awareness about road safety and slow down the traffic outside education establishments.'

'Officers have received positive feedback from teachers, parents, and pupils about our high visibility presence and the work we are doing to stop motorists driving at excessive speeds.'

John Marshall-Grint, head teacher of Ashill VC Primary School, said: 'We have welcomed the police to come along and educate the driving public. It is important to spread an awareness of the speed of traffic, and its volume, in the mornings and afternoons.'

'I can see the benefits the police can bring to schools in the short and long term, and having them involved with the children is extremely positive.'

Action has also been taken by the Norfolk Constabulary in the past two weeks after a number of traffic offences were committed in the Swaffham area.

Three endorsable fixed penalty notices were issued to drivers who were travelling at excessive speed along Brandon Road, Swaffham and Chalk Lane, Narborough.

Two warnings have also been given for seatbelt and parking matters and a vehicle has been seized for having no insurance.
