Furious parents in a mid Norfolk village have criticised a local charity for neglecting a playground which they say poses health and safety hazards to their children.

The Millennium Green ground in Carbrooke is a 10-acre wildlife haven and a tranquil place used for recreation by both parents and children.

But now concerned mothers are worried that a broken section of the fence surrounding the ground could cause injuries to youngsters playing there.

“The fence around it has been broken leaving sharp areas exposed which is dangerous as injuries may occur, but also means that the area is not properly enclosed,” said Genene Lloyd.

“The bark put on the floor isn't proper play bark, it is just the sort that you would put in your garden which means it stains clothes,” the mother-of-two added.

Mrs Lloyd is also concerned that cats sneaking through the broken side of the fence use the area as a toilet.

“Yet another hazard for my children who use the area daily as they attend Carbrooke playgroup. The situation is not acceptable. “I'm concerned for my children's ongoing health and safety as I'm sure other parents are too,” she said.

But last night John Goode, chairman of the Millennium Green Trust which runs the area said the charity was working to find a solution to the problem.

“An eight to ten foot section of the fence was kicked in by some youngsters a few months ago,” Mr Goode explained.

“Since then we have been trying to find similar material to restore the fence. There is also a possibility to take it down completely. We are currently talking to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to see what their suggestions are. Hopefully a solution will be found shortly.

“Regarding the cats using the ground as a toilet, nobody has complained as yet. Everybody on the committee is very easily available and we are waiting to hear from people who may wish to share their thoughts with us.”
