Norfolk Day has inspired a town to put up four new flagpoles to fly its love for the county as well as mark national anniversaries and special occasions.

Watton Town Council has submitted plans to install two on the historic Watton Clock Tower, a landmark on the town's high street, and two more at Wayland Hall on Middle Street.

The proposals are for permanent wall brackets that would be used to put up removable flagpoles to fly flags for events like Armed Forces Day as well as Norfolk Day.

The first ever Norfolk Day this summer proved to be a huge success, capturing the imagination of town's across the county, including Watton. And due to its success, it will take place again on Saturday, July 27 next year.

The distinctive gold and black Norfolk flag will be given extra prominence should the plans go ahead as part of efforts to spruce up Watton.

Town Clerk Jane Scarrott said: 'It something that we just want to make our high street a bit more attractive generally and try to commemorate events and anniversaries that are going on nationally or even locally.

'Norfolk Day is what started us thinking about it. We thought what are we going to do for Norfolk Day and can we at least get some flags up?

'The idea is for there to be brackets at Wayland Hall and at the Clock Tower so that we can just put flags up for things like Armed Forces Day. We were looking at Remembrance Day flags of some sort but whether we will have time to do that I don't know.'

Watton Clock Tower, which was built in 1679 by Christopher Hey, a wealthy mercer, has previously had flags, including for Commonwealth Day, flown over the high street from its tower. The new flagpoles would be closer to ground level.

The plans are part of wider efforts to make the town more attractive. A working party has also been set up to plant more floral displays.

Mrs Scarrott said: 'It part of our efforts to make the town centre look more attractive. Our floral displays are, we hope, good in the high street and we just want to expand on that and make it look better. It is part of just saying lets have a clean up and paint up and try to make Watton prettier.'
