It's a Weeze for Watton councillors
Town councillors are looking into the possibility of naming part of Watton after its German twin town of Weeze.
Town councillors are looking into the possibility of naming part of Watton after its German twin town of Weeze.
At their monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 30, councillors voted to continue looking into the idea despite being told by Breckland Council that the name could not be used as a street name.
The district council has placed Weeze on a list of names which are unacceptable and it is believed that one of the reasons for this is a concern that difficulties in pronunciation could lead to problems for emergency services trying to find an address.
While the correct way to pronounce the German town in 'Veitsa' many in Watton mispronounce it 'Wheeze' or even 'Wheezy'.

During the meeting Keith Gilbert suggested that the square outside the council offices could be renamed after the twin town while Michael Wassell suggested a playing field the council is about to take charge of could be named after it.
It was agreed the council's planning committee would discuss the matter further and clarification would be sought from Breckland on why the came cannot be used.
