A HUSTINGS event in Mid Norfolk has had to be cancelled after council officials realised it could break election rules.

Candidates had been due to face questions from young people at Breckland Council's offices on April 21 and the aim was to get teenagers more involved with politics.

But a spokesman said: 'On advice from our colleagues in election services we have unfortunately had to cancel the hustings event as it is anticipated that the event will fall in the purdah period for the forthcoming general election and it would therefore be inappropriate for the Youth Council (which is affiliated to Breckland Council) to hold an event that proactively publicises candidates involved directly in the election. We apologise for any inconvenience the cancellation causes.'

It is hoped a question and answer session will be held in the summer with the successful candidate.
