A mid Norfolk amateur writer has been given the green light to resurrect one of literature's best loved detectives.
Susan Masters from Griston, near Swaffham, is publishing a new story in the Inspector Morse saga after impressing prolific crime writer, Colin Dexter MBE, with a draft of her work.
Initially Mr Dexter, who won multiple literary awards for his 13 crime novels about Inspector Morse, had refused any advance to breathe life into the character that was killed in his last novel, The Remorseful Day.
But after reading Mrs Masters 4,000 word short story entitled, The Passing of Morse, he decided to back the story that is set to be published in the September 2010 edition of the Inspector Morse Society's newsletter.
In the new story, the Oxfordshire detective wakes up in a mortuary 10 years after his death and goes on a journey to find his God - who turns out to be Colin Dexter.
