TWO leading charities, which raises cash for vital research work, have been given a boost with the presentation by a former council chairman of cheques totalling more than �2,000.
TWO leading charities, which raises cash for vital research work, have been given a boost with the presentation by a former council chairman of cheques totalling more than �2,000.
Each of the �1,136 cheques were presented by John Rogers, a former chairman of Breckland Council, to Diabetes UK and Cancer Research UK.
The cash was raised through a variety of fundraising events which Mr Rogers has held this year, including an auction of promises, a raffle held at the chairman's reception and a garden party hosted by Jacqui Seal, clerk of Watton town council.
The presentations were made at Watton Pentecostal Church during the monthly meeting of the Watton and District Support Group for Diabetes. The group meets every month on the second Monday.
Area volunteer manager for Cancer Research UK, Paul Fleet, said the donation was very much appreciated and would go a long way in funding the charity's work in the fight against cancer.
'Cancer Research UK is almost entirely funded by the public, with very little government funding. Without the generosity and dedication of our supporters, we would not be able to continue to make progress against cancer,' he said.
Ron Thompson accepted the cheque on behalf of Diabetes UK and said funds would be used to fund holidays for children with diabetes.
He said; 'Diabetes UK has been organising family weekends and children's holidays for many years. We are very pleased to accept the cheque on behalf of the Eastern Region for Diabetes UK'.
Mr Rogers said: 'I am so pleased to be able to present these cheques to two hardworking and worthwhile charities that I have supported over the past year.
'Cancer Research's ground-breaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, has helped save millions of lives. This work is funded entirely by the public, which is why fundraising events are so important.
'There are three million people in the UK living with diabetes and 20,000 children in the UK have diabetes. We have had many fundraising events this year to help Diabetes UK continue our work to improve the lives of people with diabetes.'
