CHILDREN from a Norfolk school got stuck into their favourite books as part of National Storytelling Week.

Gooderstone school pupils clapped and cheered as their teachers read extracts of own favourite children's books, including The Tale of Little Pig Robinson, Cops and Robbers, Flat Stanley, The Gruffalo, The Famous Five and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The staff explained why the books were special to them and invited the pupils to reread the whole books later, if they wished.

During a visit to the school last Monday, school improvement partner Tim Strugnell also entered into the spirit of the event by reading The Fib to the children.

Not to outdone, some of the children then brought in their favourite books from home and shared short extracts with their friends. The children were engrossed by their friends' reading and particularly enjoyed the range of character voices and expressions used.

Literacy is a focus at Gooderstone this term and literacy co-ordinator Pamela Downs, who delivered her story in true traditional storytelling style, was delighted with the reaction of the children and the adults at school.

She said: 'It was lovely to see the children enjoying books and stories so much and for all the adults to get the opportunity to share their choices with a large audience.'
