Carbrooke children raise money for shelter charity

CHILDREN from Carbrooke Primary School have raised more than �600 for families in disaster areas.

In just a few weeks, the pupils have gathered �640 for a Shelterbox, an emergency box full of life saving supplies.

The children made the commitment to try and raise money for a box following a visit by the Rotary Club, which works with the charity. During the visit the children were able to see the box for themselves and even try out the shelter.

Fundraising activities included a non-school uniform day, a sponsored silence, a cake sale, tombola, table top sale and a school disco.

Many of the children have also decided not to send each other Christmas cards but to donate the money to the charity instead.

'We are really proud of the children, and in the way they have organised fundraising for Shelterbox', said head teacher Sue Youngs.

'I'm sure that being able to see the box and the shelter for themselves gave the children a real idea of what it might be like to experience a disaster and motivated them to want to help.'

Shelterbox responds to earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, hurricanes, cyclones, tsunamis or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box supplies up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless.
