A CITROEN 2 CV driven by a father and daughter from Norfolk 6,000 miles from Brussels to Benin in west Africa swapped the dust and dirt of the desert road for one of Norwich's shopping malls over the weekend.

Kell and Mal McLean took the car on the Touareg Trail 2009, travelling through the likes of Luxemburg, Spain, Morocco, Mali, Mauritania and Burkino Faso to raise cash for children's charity UNICEF.

The pair built the car themselves last year using parts from six Citroen 2 CVs, spending 6,000.

On the trip, throughout November last year along with 25 other teams, they were responsible for fixing anything that went wrong with the car.

On Saturday and Sunday they took the car the Castle Mall where shoppers could see the car and hear all about the pair's adventures.

Miss McLean, 28, from Stalham, said: 'It was incredible but actually living it, you can't imagine how incredible and what really made it was the people.'

At one point on the adventure they lost their team mates driving through the desert. It was recommended they travel in teams so they managed to join up with some Belgians.

Then their lights packed in and they had to drive up a rocky mountain between two other cars so they could see.

'The other teams were surprised we had made it,' said Miss McLean.

Because of some of the scrapes they got out of Miss McLean and Mr McLean, a tower crane driver from Carbrooke near Watton, won the most hard core team award, which was nominated by the other teams.

So far they have raised 1,500 for UNICEF.
