A Norfolk council has transferred ownership of three more car parks to a town council as part of a wider push to keep local assets out of the hands of the new authority set to replace it in 2028.
Watton Town Council has taken control of Goddards Court on the High Street, Thetford Road Memorial car park, and Kittel Close car park, all previously owned and run by Breckland Council.
The deal comes before a looming shakeup of local government in Norfolk that will see Breckland abolished and become a part of the larger West Norfolk Council.
Transferring assets now locks them into local control before the handover to unitary authority.
Paul Hewett, Breckland's executive member for property, said: "These transfers are about putting Breckland first and ensuring these important assets remain in the hands of local people so they can continue to best serve the needs of our residents and businesses for years to come.”
Sarah Humphries, mayor of Watton, also welcomed the transfer, and said: "The transfer of ownership of Watton’s car parks is excellent news for our residents, businesses and visitors.
"By securing these car parks, we are helping to protect easy access to our town centre thereby supporting local shops and services. Watton will remain a welcoming and convenient place to live, work and visit.
"This is a positive step for the whole community and I am delighted that the town will benefit from this important asset for many years to come.”
Thetford and Dereham car parks changed hands earlier this year, while transfers in Swaffham and Attleborough are expected to complete soon.
