Thetford Town have just one game left this season after losing 3-2 to bottom team Fakenham last night.

They travel to Ipswich Wanderers, who are two places below them in Ridgeons Division One, on Saturday.

Fakenham went two goals up early on before Sam Bryant got one back for Thetford, showing a neat turn of speed to burst past two defenders.

After the break Bryant headed a corner home to level the scores but Fakenham got the winning goal through a free-kick by Jake Betts.

The results in the past week perfectly illustrate how topsy-turvy Thetford's season has been - a mixture of some excellent results and frustrating defeats.

For counter balancing last night's frustrating defeat was an excellent result on Friday night, when Town beat Long Melford 5-1.

Thetford manager Mick Money said: “If you think of the games that were close or lost late on we could have been well and truly up there.

“But it's a young squad - the youngest in the Ridgeons League - with an average age of 20. So I need to add some experienced players in the summer.”

Money was pleased with Friday's victory. “We had a good win against Long Melford at home. All the three strikers got on the score sheet. Luck went our way, for once, when we got a penalty.”

Scorers were Danny Tanti in the first half, which finished 1-0, and then Danny Tanti, Kameran Senior, Sam Bryant and Simon Mann completed the nap hand with a consolation for the visitors.

Thetford had suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of promotion-chasing Halstead Town in Essex last week.

Halstead narrowly won the original fixture 3-2 earlier in the season, but the game had to be replayed due to Halstead fielding an ineligible player.

At half-time Thetford were worthy of the 1-1 scoreline, with Simon Mann notching the equaliser in the 17th minute.

However, it was quite different in the second half, with goals from Townrow, Pollard (2) and Bryant giving the home side all three points.

Thetford have sorted out a string of pre-season friendlies (three away, three home) to get the squad into shape for the next Ridgeons campaign.

The pick of the crop is the home game against the Canaries.
