Norfolk darts player James Hubbard.

Norfolk youngster James Hubbard recorded a stunning victory over PDC world champion Adrian Lewis on his way to the third round of German Darts Championships in Berlin.

The Wymondham player maintained his impressive emergence on to the professional circuit with an assured performance to beat the world number two 6-4.

He then went on to beat Lowestoft’s Peter Wright 6-3 in the second round before going out at the next stage 6-4 to Norfolk-based Mervyn King. Hubbard appeared on course for the quarter-finals when he built up a 4-2 lead but King then made his extra experience count to win four legs in a row. It was still an excellent tournament for Hubbard, who had set the tournament alight on day one with his victory over Lewis.

He led 3-2 before Lewis had finishes of 13 and 14 darts to take the lead but then hit back with a 14-darter of his own before taking the next two legs for a memorable triumph.

“It’s been one of my dreams to beat a world champion so it’s a big win for me and I am very proud,” said Hubbard afterwards.

“To play on the same stage as Adrian is a big achievement for me so to beat him is massive. He’s a great gentleman and congratulated me afterwards which means a lot.”
