Thetford returned to Eastern Counties League action by crushing top of the table Hadleigh.

After drawing at Hadleigh earlier on in the season, it was thought it would be a tight affair between the top two. But Thetford dominated from the kick off.

It wasn’t long before they went ahead as ill discipline from the Hadleigh pack gave Adam Harper a penalty chance.

From the restart captain Liam Burnell started to run the show with some accurate kicking into the corners to keep turning the big Hadleigh pack around.

For the first try, from a ruck in the 22, scrum half Dan Witting danced around the blind side and, with an audacious sidestep, scored under the posts.

With influential centre Adam Harper forced to leave the field, Danny Goodman entered the fray and was soon in action with some fantastic tackling. But a momentary lapse in concentration allowed Hadleigh to pulled back to 8-7 with a forwards’ try.

Just before the break Burnell put himself on the scoresheet from a well earned back row move. Dan Witting fed Burnell who chipped over the Hadleigh backs and chased his own kick to score under the posts before converting to make it 15-7.

In the second half Witting again danced through to score another converted try under the posts.

There was still time for Jordan Fisher to add a well worked try following some fantastic ball handling from Adam Allen, though Hadleigh had the last say with a late consolation try scored with Fisher on the ground injured.

Burnell commented: “This was a sensational performance from my men. Every man played with the heart, desire and passion that the red and white shirt deserved. This was a game of pure class and I’m proud of each and everyone of them.”

MoM was Dan Witting, a fine performance from the Scrum Half with two well taken tries.

On Saturday, Thetford make the short trip to Mildenhall (2.15pm).
