Swaffham’s Jay Penfold has a day out at the famous West Course at Wentworth to look forward to after becoming the Golf Days UK Norfolk Tour Champion for 2014.

Penfold came through a competitive Grand Final at the Marriott Hanbury Manor in Hertfordshire to finish on 38 points, three ahead of his nearest challengers, county captain Iain Yule from Middleton Hall and Kevin Goude from Tydd St Giles.

The top 15 players from the season-long Order of Merit took to the immaculate fairways at the five star venue. With unseasonably warm temperatures and light winds, conditions were perfect for the players to do battle.

The opening holes at Hanbury Manor saw over half the field under par to their handicaps at one point. Early leaders included Goude, Nick Barrett (Royal Norwich) and Adam Saunders (Costessey Park).

At the halfway stage, Great Yarmouth and Caister’s Steve Greatrex was leading by two strokes on three under, but Greatrex faltered over the next few holes to come back to the field. Penfold, in the penultimate group, was playing his usual steady golf and made the turn at one under to his three quarter handicap of five. A birdie at the par four 10th hole saw him hit the front on three under and although he gave one of those shots back at the next he maintained his good scoring with a string of pars over the closing stages.

Early clubhouse leader Goude returned a score of plus one from his handicap of plus two, so scoring a one under gross. With holes 16 and 17 proving tricky for some, all Goude could do was wait and watch the live leaderboard to see how Penfold would perform over the closing stages.

Meanwhile Order of Merit winner Yule was yet again having a good round and although he struggled over the last nine holes, he was well and truly in the mix.

Despite a nervy finish to his round, Penfold held firm and made par at all three of the closing holes to finish on 38 points and minus two. Yule birdied the par five 17th but needed to hole his second shot on the short 18th to tie with Penfold. Yule’s approach was just a little strong and finished just over the back of the green and Penfold had held on to be crowned champion.

He will now experience a dream day out at the Wentworth Club in Surrey. As a guest of TaylorMade Adidas Golf – official suppliers to Golf Days UK – he will spend two hours in the performance lab where he will go through an advanced custom-fit session. Armed with his new set of irons, he will then take to the fairways of the famous West Course – host the BMW Championship – with a guest.
