With leaders Woodbridge Town having to call off their fixture, Swaffham Town had the opportunity to go top of Division One of the Thurlow Nunn League on Saturday - and it was a chance that they took with both hands.

The Pedlars turned in a gritty performance to grasp the three points from a Debenham side who

seemed determined to come away with a draw.

The falling temperatures didn’t help their cause but the pitch and the conditions held out for the duration of the game as a patient home side made it 11 wins on the trot.

The breakthrough finally came in the 70th minute when Joe Jackson was brought down in the box and Ryan Pearson converted the resultant penalty.

Pearson claimed a second seven minutes later, trying his luck from 20 yards and lobbing the keeper to net in the top left hand corner.

The hard-earned victory took Swaffham a point clear at the top of the table and although Woodbridge have three games in hand the Pedlars will be happy to have the points in the bag.

In a steady performance from Swaffham, keeper Sam Pishorn was not needed for shot stopping but he commanded his area bravely. The back four stood strong, the midfield were steady and confident while the strike force were unlucky not to have more, with the visiting keeper on form and keeping his side in the game.

Swaffham hit the road on Saturday to take on mid-table Holland FC who play at Rash Green Bowl, the home of FC Clacton.

On Boxing Day there is an 11am kick-off for the derby match at Downham Market for what will be the fourth time the sides have met this season in league and cup.

The weather got the better of both the Reserves and the Under-18s and both sides will now have to wait until the New Year before they see action again. The reserves go into the break in seventh place in Division Three of the Anglian Combination, seven points adrift of the promotion places.

The players and committee of Swaffham Town Football Club wish sponsors and supporters all the very best for Christmas and the New Year and thank them for their continued backing.
