Archant

Swaffham have started to play a lot better over the last three weeks, with a good win against Beccles followed by a close game against undefeated leaders Fakenham.

For some reason nothing seemed to work against Great Yarmouth Broadland, on a day when the large home crowd were expecting big things, but the hosts still did enough to edge home 18-10.

Broadland didn’t shy away from the physical contact and used their big men to good effect, but Swaffham’s defence stood firm and when the opportunity arose, a 12 man drive pushed Broadland back over the line for the first try.

With a couple of penalties, Ed Jones pushed the half-time score out to 11-0 and within minutes of the restart Adam Potter broke clear to score near the posts. The conversion was good and Swaffham had opened up an 18 point lead which looked like it may produce the bonus point as the half went on.

However, the visitors had other ideas and Swaffham got drawn in to a scrappy last 30 minutes, allowing Broadland to score a try and get a penalty to get within reach of a bonus losing point. Swaffham got close to line on a few occasions but the last pass was either poor or not made when the overlap was available.

However, a win at this stage of the season was the main result and the points have pushed Swaffham up to sixth in the table and out of the relegation zone for the first time.

Swaffham travel to North Walsham’s second string on Saturday for their latest Eastern Counties One North fixture while the seconds host Norwich III.

Following some recent better performances on the pitch, the club will be hoping that this year’s fireworks display, the sixth year of the event, will go with a bang and help raise much needed funds for the club with over 100 junior members and two senior sides.

The club has recently supported local charities Meadow House, Norfolk Home Hospice and the Swaffham and Litcham Hospice, but this is one event done each year for the benefit of the club and its members.

The event takes place on November 5 (Sunday) and the club will be open from 5pm, with stalls, a barbecue and bar available, before the display starts at 7pm. Prices: adults £5, children over five £3, under fives free, family ticket for two adults and three children £10.
