Swaffham Golf Club’s ladies will be aiming to end a long wait for glory in the county’s premier knock-out competition next month.

Their six-strong team booked their place in the final of the Gillieson Cup with an impressive 3-0 win over Royal Norwich.

They will now be aiming to complete the job when they take on Bawburgh - 3-0 winners over Middleton Hall in the other semi-final - at Thetford on Sunday, October 8 (1pm start).

Swaffham will be competing at this stage for the first time in over 40 years, with their three previous previous finals - in 1960, 1973 and 1976 - also ending in defeat.

In the semi-final at the neutral venue of Bawburgh Abigail O’Riordan (2) and Jane Delaney (11) beat Nickie Clarke (9) and Pat Bland (15, rec 6) 3&1, Sian Fenn-Green (6) and Ann Ewer (14) beat Angela Loveday (12) and Mary Cartwright (13, rec 3) 4&3 and Myra Lane (13) and Cathy Shand (16, rec 10) beat Jo Herd (5) and Jasmine Campbell (5) 2&1.

Bawburgh have a good recent record in the competition, winning in 2014 and being runners-up in 2012.

In their semi-final, which was staged at Swaffham, Jane Winsworth (7) and Jo Barnard (17) beat Elaine Cavert (16) and Pat Webb (19, rec 6) 4&3, Phon Green (11) and Jill Gooch (10) beat Truda Foster (16) and Pat Hoban (15, rec 5) 6&5 and Anne Sibley (11) and Sarah Watts (9) beat Joan Gill (19) and Chris Woolley (20, rec 10) 3&2.

Meanwhile Abigail O’Riordan and Sian Fenn-Green put their local knowledge to good use as they won the Earlham Handicap Cup at the Norfolk County Foursomes competition at Swaffham.

The pair picked up 71 points to lift the silverware.

After a first round played in testing conditions, with winter gear required, the 60-plus competitors were glad to come into the warm of the clubhouse for sandwiches and tea.

No one, including the eventual winners, was happy with their score. And then the sun came out and the players had a much more enjoyable afternoon round, with the scoring reflecting that.

Barnham Broom’s Jo Ashmore and Ellie Brown won the Johnson Scratch Salver with 64 points.
