The warning, issued by the Met Office, said icy patches are expected this morning (Friday) as a band of rain, sleet and snow pushes northeaswards.

The Met Office said: “Some roads and railways are likely to be affected leading to longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Some delays to air travel are also possible.

“Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces are possible.”

The authority’s cheif forecaster added: “A band of rain is expected to push northeastwards across England on Friday morning and for an hour or two, after the rain begins, it is possible that rain may fall onto previously frozen surfaces leading to ice.

“Ice is less likely to form in built-up areas of larger cities. The rain may also turn to sleet and snow across the Midlands and East Anglia for a time leading to some temporary generally small accumulations before turning back to rain.”

The warning is in place until 9am.
