They say the British weather varies dramatically from one day to the next.

But today, it seems to have turned on a sixpence in a matter of hours - with temperatures immediately turning from below freezing to balmy sunshine.

Incredibly for May, temperatures were more like winter at the start of the day with Santon Downham, near Thetford, recording the lowest minimum temperature at -0.2C.

Other areas in Norfolk and Suffolk stayed above freezing but were not much warmer, with Houghton Hall recording a minimum of 0.7C, Tibenham Airfield 1.2C and Cavendish 1.6C.

The figures were Tweeted by Weatherquest meteorologist Chris Bell.

But Norwich-based Weatherquest later Tweeted: “After a chilly start, it will be dry with long spells of sunshine and just some patchy cloud.

“Feeling warm inland, but chilly near the coast in a light north-easterly wind. Highs reaching near 20C inland, but closer to 13C along the coast.”
