Six branches of Norwich and Peterborough Building Society will close their doors for the final time today.

The closures, which include three in Norfolk – Sheringham, Watton and Plumstead Road in Norwich, are part of a rebrand of the building society which was announced in January.

Under the plans, 28 branches in East Anglia will be closed by December 1, while a further 20 will be become branches of the Yorkshire Building Society, N&P’s owner, leading to the loss of 136 jobs.

The nearest N&P branch for customers who banked at Sheringham will now be Cromer, while Watton customers will have to travel to Swaffham. Plumstead Road customers’ nearest outlet is now Castle Mall.

The next tranche of closures will take place on November 10, when the following sites will close: Chapelfield (Norwich); Dereham; Fakenham; Huntingdon (Cambs); March (Cambs); Southwold; Thetford; Werrington (Peterborough); Whittlesey (Cambs); Wroxham; and Wymondham.

The sites in Fakenham, Dereham, Huntingdon and March will be taken over by the Nottingham Building Society, along with three in Lincolnshire, with up to 50 former N&P staff expected to be offered roles.

The first closure took place last month, when the Cambridge St Andrews Street branch shut.
