Norfolk police have launched an investigation after a series of hoax calls were made to members of the public from someone purporting to be a police officer.

The calls, made in the Great Yarmouth area, were brought to the police’s attention last night at about 9.40pm after residents reported receiving suspicious phone calls.

The caller claimed to be a police officer and gave details which have subsequently been proven to be false. Enquiries are ongoing to trace the person responsible.

The calls prompted the police to issue a series of tweets on the forces’ official Twitter account warning people of callers impersonating police officers.

The tweets said: “Norfolk Police are warning members of the public to be cautious about phone calls from people claiming to be police officers.

“If in doubt, ask for full identity of caller and call the control room on 101 to check first.”

The warning comes after police issued advice to motorists earlier this year after a woman was approached by a man driving a car with blue flashing lights on a quiet country lane in south Norfolk.

The advice stated: “If you do get pulled over but you are suspicious, lock your doors, close your windows and ask for the officer to show their identity. You can then call the police on 101 to confirm that identity; however, always dial 999 in an emergency.”
