Norfolk campaign group taking action against the state pension age to visit Thetford
A Norfolk campaign group, who are taking action against the acceleration of the state pension age, are calling on other women to join their cause.
Women from Pension Action In Norfolk (PAIN) - which is part of the national movement Women Against State Pension Age Inequality (WASPI) - have been touring around the county to talk and inform other women of their situation.
Representatives from the group, which has around 500 members, will be visiting Thetford for a coffee and catch up event at the cafe in Sainsbury’s on London Road on Saturday.
They are asking for women who were born in the 1950s to come along and discuss the problems caused by the increase of state pension age - which has meant some people face having their pensions delayed by up to six years.
Lynn Nicholls, who is a member of PAIN, said: “We are working our way around Norfolk to raise awareness. We are aiming to start satellite groups so ladies can get help and support locally.
“This is the first one we have held in Thetford. It is mainly members who come along to catch up on what is planned. At the events we offer advice and help.”
The group was started last year and the members have been around Norfolk and spoken to all nine of the county’s MPs to discuss their cause.
So far more than 2,000 people have signed a petition urging Norfolk’s MPs to support and join them.
The national group has 2.6 million members with more than 140 local groups and is continuing to grow.
Mrs Nicholls, who lives in Thetford, added: “It is still surprising people because they do not know this is going on.
“You plan towards getting your pension at 60 so it affects not just the woman but their whole family.
The Thetford coffee and catch up event will be held from 3pm to 4pm.
Members of Pain will be joining other members of WASPI groups from around Britain for a demonstration in London outside Westminster on Wednesday, March 8 - it coincides with Budget Day and International Women’s Day.
