A flurry of fury is raining down on councillors who voted to give themselves a big increase in their allowances.

The news that came from Norfolk County Council yesterday has seen almost total condemnation from people commenting on our story on the web, Facebook and Twitter.

As reported, an independent panel, “mindful” of potential budget cuts, including cutting subsidies for bus services and reducing spend on children’s centres, recommended the basic allowance remained at £9,401.

However, Conservative leader Cliff Jordan went against that advice and recommended a basic allowance increase to £10,500 and that his own special responsibility allowance as leader should go up to £31,700 from £27,495.

He also recommended the chairs of adult social care and children’s services committees should get an increase from £13,747 to £15,809.

Mr Jordan defended the increase – £142,000 in total among the 84 councillors – saying Norfolk councillors got less than comparable neighbouring counties.

The council agreed the increase, backdated to May this year, by 39 votes to 26, with two abstentions. The Labour and Liberal Democrat groups voted against.

Here is a selection of your comments so far:

Michael Uwins: “This boost to their expenses follows massive, blundering overspending and ruthless cuts to essential public services. Those councillors that voted for this selfish increase are a disgrace and I hope that the voting public have taken note.”

Comfortablynumb: “Arrogance, ignorance and greed.”

Maldonglass: “This is a rise of over 10% at a time when he expects staff to carry on working when they have had their pay frozen for years under a Tory government.”

A fine city: “No one should decide their own pay rise when it is public money being spent. I object more to the fact that they are voting for their own increases than the principle of there being an increase.”

Peter Waller: Disgraceful and immoral.”

Nigel Harper: “An unbelievable two fingers up to us council tax payers.”

EDP24 Facebook

Sam Kiff: “Disgusting to increase their allowances while services are being cut - they should be ashamed.”

Glenn Burton: “Perhaps one of those hard-working councillors could have organised the gritters this morning just a tad better.”

Mark Newstead: “How many of you would get out of bed for £9,401? If the guy in the article is working the hours he says he is that works out at £3.62 an hour. That’s not even minimum wage.”

Tony Barrett: “We’re all in it together. Tory MPs and Tory councillors once again showing total contempt for the electorate.”

Twitter

@jen31_jones: “I guess they found their magic money tree.”

@tonyp8886: “How about they don’t have a pay rise like the rest of us and put the money to good use?”

@seanstanton30: “Scandalous but of course typical. They suggest you have to pay the rate of pay to attract the best so on that assumption maybe they should have a 10pc reduction. Shame on them.”
