Hundreds of people enjoyed the spring sunshine at the unveiling of an interpretative notice board that marked the completion of phase one of Swaffham’s community orchard.

The project was inspired by six-year-old Georgie Keddie, who decided on a family walk in 2009 that the area would look wonderful lined with fruit trees.

The idea was included in the Advance Swaffham town plan, and received a £9,700 Big Lottery Fund grant.

Swaffham mayor Shirley Matthews unveiled the notice board, outlining the history of the orchard and explaining the trees and wildlife on the site, at the event on Saturday March 24.

Children enjoyed a nature trail and free bouncy castle, while Active Norfolk encouraged people to try archery and local musician Pete Allison and friends provided folk music.

Mark Keddie, the volunteer project manager whose daughter first had the idea for the orchard, said: “The community orchard has been helped tremendously by the King’s Lynn Community Payback team, and is always looking for more volunteers to help with a range of activities.”

  • It's the old railway line, between the duck pond and the allotments at the top of Tumbler Hill.
